Hi f-list! If you've followed this journal lately, you've probably already noticed that I'm going crazy over Star Trek all over again. New Trek is awesome and completely made of love, and I'm trying to get my hands on Old Trek so I can have a big nostalgia fest. Star Trek was my first fandom, and the show I owe my interest in Sci-fi to.
However, when I first started watching ST, I was twelve, my English wasn't great, and I had no idea there was such a thing as fanfiction. (Which didn't stop me from writing it, of course.) So I missed the whole fanworks part of fandom, and now that I want to dive into the deep pool of Star Trek fanfic, I have no idea where to start.
So, trekkies on my f-list, what would you recommend? I like well-written, fun, twisty stories. I prefer the plots to be focused on friendship for this show, but wouldn't be opposed to good slash (preferably Kirk/McCoy). I want the characters to be in-character. I am (surprise, surprise) a big action/adventure, hurt/comfort lover, and I'm equally much in love with all the characters.
Help me, what are your favourite stories?

Date: 2009-05-16 06:52 pm (UTC)I read everything back in the day when it came out. All the novelizations of the episodes, all the books that were written. I wrote my own stories too, painfully dreadful and thankfully lost through time. I knew there were fanzines, but fortunately I did not have ready access to them or else my stories would have been read by *other people*. I would love to read some more stories now...
There is an anthology series of fan-based stories that gets published every year now--began sometime after ST:TNG. These stories are *awesome*. They take submissions every year and select the best of the bunch to publish--I submitted a story one year. I'll be the first to admit, it wasn't that great. I hadn't written a thing since I was 15 and ST:TNG wasn't *my* show. But when I discovered fanfic 10 years later...well, let's just say that the exercise of writing daily and getting FB from readers has helped my writing skills immensely. :-)
The stories that I thought were the *best* back in the 70's were a series of fan-written fics put together by Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath. Star Trek: The New Voyages Volumes 1 & 2. The duo also wrote an *extremely* slashy novel entitled The Price of the Phoenix. I know you probably can't find these books now, but it might be worth doing an out of print book search. I'd loan them to you but I don't trust the mail service to get them there and back in one piece. :-)

Date: 2009-05-16 07:42 pm (UTC)Speaking of early attempts at ST-fic - I took a look through my old harddrive today and found some and OMG, it hurts my eyes! It's Voyager fic, because that was the first ST-show I watched as it was new and shiny when I was a kid (I know, I know, I'm a baby...) And the fic, it's just awful, with the most terrible Mary Sue I've ever encountered, complete with angsty backstory, written in Swedish, and I've tried to translate everything and it's... gah! *hides from terrible, terrible fic* It's a relief to find that fourteen years and a lot of practice has left me a better writer ;)

yay for the ST link--can't wait to check it out!
