To watch Star Trek or not watch Star Trek? On the plus side - my first geeky love, the thing that drew me into fandom before I knew such a thing existed. Also, Simon Pegg.

On the minus side - my first geeky love. Do I want it spoiled?

I can't wait to see that, hopefully going tonight. Apparently it's meant to be a great film all round, not just a great Star Trek film. So I'd say go see it.

Okay. I saw it last night! I don't think there's enough room here for my squee. It was AWESOME! Keep in mind, I've been a trekkie since birth, so I had to go into the movie with an extremely open mind and a willingness to go with the flow. Because, I'd see the trailers and I knew they were going to change some very basic well known facts and twist them into little bits.../rant. So, yeah. Open minded!

It took about 7 minutes before I was sitting on the edge of my seat and going OMG! OMG! And I pretty much stayed that way the entire movie. I wanted it to be longer. There were tons of in-jokes that only a true trekkie would catch, which resulted in lots of giggling on my part. And the action scenes were hard-hitting.

The only thing that surprised me is something I don't want to spoil you on, so I'll talk about that after you see the movie. If you want, I'll go with you. How much is the airfare? :) It would totally be worth it!!

Go. See it! You won't regret it. Also, the guy they have playing Kirk, too damn cute. Lovely blue eyes, which is very distracting. lol

I want to see it, but I think I'm going to have to go with the mindset that it's going to be a good sci-fi movie instead of OMG STAR TREK, because I still remember what it felt like when I discovered Star Trek at the age of twelve, how I wrote (terrible, Mary Sue-infested) fanfic before I even knew there was fanfic and how I scoured the 'net for information just to discover that there were other people like me, people who were so obsessed with a TV-show that they devoted all their spare time to it. I'm pretty sure discoveries like that only happens once in a lifetime and I think I'd be pretty disappointed if I went to the cinema expecting the same feeling, you know....

OMG! I got to see it a second time last night. (hubby took me!) I was jumping in my seat the entire time. Cause, this time I paid more attention. (until those damn blue eyes came on the screen and I got distracted again. And wow! he really needs to be in black. cause wow! It was like Sheppard-in-black-hotness level. )

Um...where was I??? Oh yes, movie!!!

So, at least you're young enough that there was internet to feed your new addiction. I had to resort to reading books. (Yes, I own something like 300 star trek books.) I remember when my internet was dial up and took 5 minutes to load a page. (I really didn't have the patience for it but I still did. I actually found my first fanfic with ST:Voyager of all things. Helps that I was a voyager fan.) It was on a BBS? system. I forget. It's been a long time. There was a thought here, but I lost it! lol

OH, lifetime trekkie thing. I totally understand that. Been watching Star Trek for as long as I can remember. Knew all the characters, places, ships, dialogue from each episode. Had TV Guide covers. All that. So I understand what you mean by being disappointed.

Go in with an open mind and remember to go with the flow...think of it as a new doodle-pad with familiar tools, but a whole new picture.

(Am trying not to spoil anything so it's hard not to say...this and this was awesome.)

Sorry to hear about the money. I only got to go due to tax refund money. So I feel your pain. Sends virtual hugs. Hope you get to see it soon. I'd love to dissect it with you. In total fangirl squee!

Ah, Voyager was what got me hooked on Sci-fi in general and Star Trek in particular. Mum had to pry me away from the TV! And when I discovered that they showed ToS on Sundays, I was absent from Sunday lunches for six months. Poor Mum...

However, apparently the movie theatre in my city hates geeks. I decided that Star Trek is, after all, more important than food, only to find out that they're not showing it where I live. I might be a tiny little bit disgruntled at the moment.

Okay, you guys have convinced me. Now, if only I wasn't so broke. Food or ST, is it really a choice?

You make a compelling point. Yes, definitely worth investigating... for purely academic reasons, naturally... ;)

You know, if it doesn't work for you, you can always tell yourself 'this is an AU', which I do all the time now. But I suspect you will totally love it! :-0

From the squee of others, I suspect so too. I'll just have to go rob a bank so I can afford it!
