Freedom + Star Trek squee!
May. 12th, 2009 08:02 pm1. Today, I celebrate the one-year anniversary of my escape from the Dungeon of Doom. *dances happy dance of freedom* That wraith-like place completely sucked away my will to live. At least I learned one thing: Huge multinational callcenters bad, Small Mr&Mrs Boss-owned callcenters good. *loves Mr&Mrs Boss, even though they're going to Greece in a week, leaving the company in my trembling and terrified hands*

All you who have squeed before me, I squee with you! When I started watching, I was prepared to overlook a lot of things, and here I sit by the end of the film with a big goofy grin on my face! I think it's safe to say that my first geeky love remains intact.
Many people smarter than me have said smart things so I will not even attempt to do deep commentary. I do have a few thoughts, which I feel I need to share with you.
Yes, there might have been better actor choices for Scotty *coughPaulMcGillioncough* but come on, Simon Pegg! He is awesome and makes everything he touches awesome by association. Zin approves.
Yes, Uhura is cool, capable and everything I could've hoped for from a character who I admired before I knew the meaning of feminism. Zin approves.
Yes, the AU storyline is a complete stroke of genius because of all the possibilities, and because of the emotional impact on me as a watcher. Even though I do know these characters in the future and knows what happens to them, there's that tiny little seed of doubt because this is J.J. Abrams, and it's an alternative timeline so it could end differently, there could be heartbreak and sorrow. It's a fantastic way to keep the interest in the story going. Zin approves.
I've never really been a Kirk-girl before. I might be on my way to getting converted. I have always been a rabid Spock-girl. I am now an even more rabid Spock-girl. I love this version of Bones McCoy with all my heart. And I want to take Chekov home and keep him!
The cinemas of Dalecarlia deserve the big loss of income they will get for not showing this film. When they go bankrupt, I will stand outside and point and laugh. (Though I do look forward to seeing Star Trek on a big screen - probably sometime next year unless the local entertainment industry gets their collective heads out of their asses.) Yarr!!!
