For Firefly, you can just do what I do: watch the TV series by itself and pretend that Wash totally doesn't meet his demise in the movie. It's a but pathetic, but that's what keeps me from being sad.
I don't actually watch that many science fiction-y shows, so I don't have any recommendations. If you enjoy straight comedy, though, I have lots of amazing shows to rec! :)
