I'm beginning to encounter the mindset that Behring Breivik, the man responsible for the shootings and most likely the bombings in Norway, is 'just' a crazy right-wing extremist (like that would somehow make anything better?)

NO. No, he isn't. The man is a terrorist, plain and simple. Suggesting that he's not guilty of terrorism simply because he's not an islamist is a) incredibly racist and b) wrong, wrong, wrong.

Let's not make any apologies for this guy, okay?

You are not the only one who has noticed the 'disturbed individual' approach to the reporting here--and my initial reaction was the same as yours. If it is any consolation, there are others noticing and commenting on this fact as well--I'm seeing it spread across social media outlets.

I think a tiny part of the way it is being reported could be an attempt to emphasize the 'isolated attempt' aspect of things, in a country that is reeling in shock right now. I certainly *hope* that is what is behind the qualifiers here.
Edit: No, I have to take that back. After seeing the news organizations that are whitewashing the suspect's actions/intentions, I can only conclude they are doing so because it doesn't suit their agenda to label someone with similar political beliefs as a terrorist. These are the people who think "Don't retreat--reload!" is a good campaign slogan. I truly fear for my country sometimes :-(

My heart goes out to everyone who has been touched by this criminal tragedy. I know when something similar happened in my home town a few years back, you were hard pressed to find *anyone* who wasn't affected by it in some way.

I feel so very badly for your friend, el_gilliath here. Anything I can offer seems so inadequate.

I completely agree. This monster has the same fundamentalist philosophy and psychology as any other terrorist: he believes his views are more important than human life and he despises the democratic process. Given that he was more 'successful' than most terrorists the condemnation should actually be greater - not tempered or mitigated because he is Christian, white or Norwegian. He is a terrorist, and that is all we need to remember about him.
