1. Friday afternoon conversation at work:

Zin: Oh, look! I want bedsheets with ponies.
K: No, you want bedsheets with zombies.
Zin: There are bedsheets with zombies? Give me!

My co-workers know me so well...

2. Mum's birthday tomorrow. She wished for a party, which means she'll get a party. I will do my best not to end up in the kitchen as usual. Whee!

The SH purists are probably covering in disgust somewhere and I bet my ass there's a bunch of old school Holmes fans who are now grumbling about how their precious fandom will be overrun by teenage girls drawn in by the pretty a la Star Trek reboot.

Personally, I don't care one bit. I thoroughly enjoyed this interpretation of my favourite detective. Robert Downey Jr makes pretty much everything he touches awesome by association and his Holmes is a version of Holmes I can definitely buy even if he's not exactly classic Holmes but more of an eccentric, brilliant lunatic. I also love snarky!competent!Watson who is definitely not the bumbling comic relief from earlier adaptions, but instead Holmes' straight man. RDJ and Jude Law have great chemistry!

Also, you do not need to put on any slash goggles to see the Holmes/Watson love. Holmes spends the entire film pouting over Watson's impending marriage to Mary Morstan...

(Personally, I prefer them as friends since I am one of those weird people who believe that a relationship does not need to be romantic to be valid. Friendship is just as important in my world, maybe even more important, since your friends are the ones who will still be there when your lovers leave. Romance and porn is great if I'm in that mood, but what I really love is tales about epic friendship, which I believe the Sherlock Holmes stories are.)

In believe I will see it again! Now, can someone please point me in the direction of some good gen fic?

It's very much fun! Well worth the money! I read the books when I was a kid, but I recently got hold of them in English, so I'm re-reading now :)

I read them all as a child and then again as an adult. Holmes and Watson are some of those rare characters that supercede the writing of the stories themselves to become immortal in their own way.

Not like any other pairings I can think of :-)

I find it interesting your take on the Holmes/Watson dynamic and how the bonds of friendship can be just as strong as that of 'love' in some circumstances. I've felt that way about pairings people have slashed before (and gotten my head bitten off for daring to suggest it) and think it is very true.

One of my pet peeves is the expression 'we're just friends' - as if platonic love is somehow inferior to romantic love? Unless of course you're lucky enough to find someone who is both their lover and their best friend.

Slash is fun if I can see the pairing, but I think there are a lot of people who slashes characters just for slash's sake. I need to be able to see it to slash people. John/Rodney? Hell yes! Fraser/Ray V? No. Fraser/Ray K? Yes! Kirk/Spock? Sorry, I can't see it. reboot!Kirk/McCoy? So doing it! I don't get into a show or a movie or a book looking for people to ship or slash - I get into it because the characters are interesting. If there's a pairing that stands out to me, that's wonderful, but I don't have to pair everyone up. Friendship is more than enough for me.
