Ah, see, now I was going to say Firefly too (only I had assumed you had already seen it). I came to FF late in the game and actually saw Serenity first, so I tell myself that Serenity is an AU version of FF. Weird, I know.
I have never been able to get into Farscape for some reason that I can't fully explain. I was a big Babylon 5 fan at the time (right up to season 5)and even though is seems a little cheesy now, I still think it has some of the all-time best storylines as sci-fi shows go. And I have been watching some of the original Battlestar Galactica series, which is waaaaaay beyond cheesy, but OMG Starbuck and Apollo are so slashy its not even funny!
If we are going with non-sci fi recs, I was enjoying Women's Murder Club until the writer's strike put a big hole in the season (and the timing of its return sorta ruled out the continuation of JFlan's character on the show). I don't know if it can pick up the momentum again to get renewed for next year now. I also like The Closer very much--worth starting from the very beginning to get a feel for the series and the characters.
I know what you mean about the embarrassment squick--it makes me squirm to see horrifically embarrassing situations depicted as funny, or huge emotional scenes where there is great public embarrassment for all concerned. I'm sure that says something very specific about me...;-)
