I'm sitting at work and we don't have anything better to do than watch youtube videos of drunk people falling down, so I might as well do this instead.

So, [livejournal.com profile] sgamadison asked me why I like Suits and I had to do some thinking. I usually hate lawyer shows, but for some reason, this one caught my interest. (I swear, it's not only because of the pretty people and the snark.)

Usually, the best way to make me like a show is to have the the characters be likeable. They don't have to be saints or anything, but I want them to at least be good guys. In Suits... they aren't. More often than not, I'd like to smack them with a spoon until they start behaving. And for some strange reason, I like it. No one is exclusively good or bad.

This is Mike Ross. Mike is a bit of an ass, but hides it under a shell of adorable puppyness that makes people want to take him in and feed him and pet him. (Get used to people referring to Mike as a puppy. The show does it. The fandom does it. Everyone does it.) He's pretty much a giant screw-up who got kicked out of college for selling the answers to a test. After that, he made his living taking other people's test for them. He also smoked a lot of pot. On top of all that, Mike has eidetic memory which supposedly makes him something of a genius. Following a situation involving his grandmother's medical bills, a suitcase full of pot, and a police chase, Mike finds himself getting hired as an associate for the Manhattan law firm Pearson Hardman. Despite not having a law degree. (Although he did pass the Bar on a bet. Because he's a genius with eidetic memory. Yep, it's that kind of show.)

This is Harvey Specter. Harvey is an ass (though possibly not as big an ass as he likes people to think.) He's the best closer in the city and a newly promoted Senior Partner at Pearson Hardman. Harvey is the one who hires Mike, fully aware of the fact that Mike is neither a lawyer nor a Harvard graduate. Harvey likes nice suits, sports, Captain Kirk, and one-night-stands. He has a glass elevator in his condo. This should be enough to give you an idea of what kind of person he is. Harvey also likes to win, and he prefers people to believe that he doesn't care about anyone else than himself. Mike is determined to prove him wrong. Let the shenanigans begin.

This is Jessica Pearson. She's a bit of a (hard)ass, but a brilliant ass. (How could she be anything else? She's played by Gina Torres!) Jessica is the Managing Partner at Pearson Hardman and Harvey's boss and old mentor. Once upon a time, she took him under her wings the same Harvey did with Mike. Jessica is a master manipulator and she always wins.

This is Rachel Zane. She's a bit of an ass. (Do you see a pattern here, hm?) Rachel is a paralegal and the best researcher in the firm. That's why she gets her own office while Mike only gets a cubicle. Rachel is very smart and her dream is to become a lawyer, but she doesn't do well on tests and hasn't been able to pass the LSAT's. Enter Mike, who used to help people cheat on them... It's also worth mentioning that Mike has a giant crush on her. I don't blame him, 'cause she's gorgeous, if maybe a little bit of a hypocrite.

This is Louis Litt. He's an enormous ass. He's a Junior Partner in the firm and got passed over for promotion in favour of Harvey. As you can imagine, Louis is a little bitter about that. He's the boss of the associates and describes himself as a 'disciplinarian', which pretty much means that he likes to keep them in constant fear of him. Louis is absolutely fascinating. He's trying so very hard to come out on top but, unfortunately lacking charm and people skills, he tends to go about it in the wrong way. Sometimes, you can't help but feel a little sorry for him, but the next moment he does something to make you go back to wanting to slap him. In Louis' defense should be said that he is very good with numbers and I'm reasonably sure he has a heart somewhere.

I'm saving the best for last. This is Donna. She's a bit of an ass, but utterly awesome in every way that counts. Donna is Harvey's personal assistant and I suspect she completely runs his life. Donna does not take shit from anyone and she's not afraid to resort to tears and blackmail to get her will.

Here, have a demonstration:

There are also a bunch of other characters, most notably Trevor, Mike's best friend, who seems to be the cause of most of the bad choices Mike has made in his life. Add Jenny, Trevor's girlfriend, who might now be or not be dating Mike instead. It remains to be seen.

Anyway, this is definitely a show I watch for the interesting characters.
