Merlin Marathon Day

Yesterday, I had a bit of a headache and stiff shoulders. This morning, I woke up with the worst wry neck of my life. When the simple motion of reaching for my cell phone to turn off the alarm made me cry (literally cry - that's how I know it's bad...) I had to realise that there would be no work for me today. Long story short, I've been forced to spend the entire day flat on my back because even thinking about moving made me hurt.
So with nothing else to do, I decided to watch the rest of Merlin season 3 that I haven't been able to work up the enthusiasm for before.
The thing about Merlin is that ever since S2, I've kept watching in the hopes that it would get better, and it didn't. After the first three or so episodes of S3 I had more or less given up on it completely and decided to just stop watching. Then came today, and I was bored enough to watch the rest of it.
With most shows I like, I can get into enough that I don't think about the faily bits too hard until the second viewing. With Merlin, I don't have an entertainment filter - I notice everything while it happens and it's a complete mystery why I don't just turn it off and find something better.
I just have to rant a little bit about this show's view of women because it's been bothering me all day. Let me just start with my lovely Gwen, who I adored in S1. Ever since she became Arthur's love interest, she's suddenly nothing but Arthur's love interest. Gwen's only role on the show is in relation to Arthur and that sucks. And don't even get me started on Morgana. It seems like all women on this show who have their own agency are automatically evil. I have spent much much time rooting for Morgause and I am not ashamed of this fact. Plus - Princess Elena from 3x06. Oh, how my heart broke for that girl. At least they didn't make her disgustingly lovesick for Arthur, but that was pretty much the only saving grace of that episode. Of course there has to be something wrong with a woman who's clumsy and socially awkward and gets hiccups and eats food and belches and farts and doesn't like to wear high heels. God forbid that's actually the way she is!
On a different topic, also something that's been bothering me all day. Cendred's army looks curiously Middle Eastern to me. Good job on that, show, that's really what we need more of - media telling us that people who wear turbans are by definition bad.
And now that I've got that out of my system - what really irritates me is that after that finale, I'm going to have to keep watching! Not in the hopes that it will get better because I'm pretty sure it won't, but just for the rare moments when Arthur isn't a complete jerk, and for that thing Gaius does with his eyebrow, and for the Knights of the Round Table and because I want to know what happens next! (Truth to be told - I might keep watching just for Gwaine. Judge me all you want, I have a weakness for seemingly carefree characters with troubled pasts.)
(Neck is a little better now. I've got an appointment with my physical therapist tomorrow morning and he can hopefully sort it out.)
