Apples and Nobels
Oct. 11th, 2007 02:38 pmI'm depressed over the weather. October 11:th and it's freaking snowing. But I made an apple crumble with apples from my grandma's tree and it smells delicious.
Anyway, the Nobel prize in literature this year went to Doris Lessing, something I'm very happy about. Not only because she's a woman and a cat-lover but also because she's written science fiction.
It made me think of Rodney in the Entangled Particles-verse. When it's his turn, some forty years into the future, I'm sure everyone will gather and wait for the announcement. They have done so for almost twenty years, ever since people started to mention Rodney's name in connection to the literature prize. So John has invited Laura and Carson and their big family, and Madison is on speakerphone and they're all waiting for that phone call. This is the first year Rodney isn't waiting with them. He doesn't care, he says, he's sure the prize will go to some writer with an unpronouncable name that no one's ever heard of because it always does, and what can they possibly know about literature in Sweden?
But then, ten minutes before the announcement, Rodney's phone rings and he jerks and freezes, just staring at it, so it's John who picks up and answers that yes, Rodney is there, just wait a moment. Then he hands the phone to Rodney and the look on his face when he gets the news is unforgettable, his eyes go wide and his jaw falls down and he can't get a word out, just stands there so white in the face that John is a little worried he's going to faint, so he makes Rodney sit down and put his head between his knees. Rodney takes a couple of deep breaths, and then he looks up and the first thing out of his mouth is, "Take that, Kavanagh!" And they all laugh, John and Laura most of all because they know how hard Rodney has worked for this and how much he deserves it. Two big happy tears roll down Rodney's cheeks and he grabs John's face and plants a big sloppy kiss on his mouth and whispers, "Thank you, thank you, thank you."
Something like that...
